FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SHANE WINS 2ND-CONSECUTIVE APBA GOLD CUP; ICONIC RACE TO RETURN TO DETROIT IN 2016

Detroit, Michigan (July 27, 2015) — After a single year hiatus, the oldest active trophy in motorsports, the prestigious APBA Gold Cup, will return to Detroit in 2016.  Just this past weekend, defending champion Jimmy Shane, driving the U-1 Oberto “Miss Madison”, won the 2015 HAPO APBA Gold Cup, held on the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington.

“Bringing the APBA Gold Cup back to Detroit next year for the 100th anniversary is something truly special,” said Mark Weber, president of Detroit Riverfront Events, Inc., the organizing body for the UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit HydroFest, taking place August 22-23, 2015, on the Detroit River.

The Gold Cup race was first run on the Detroit River in 1916, with the Miss Minneapolis, driven by Bernard Smith, taking home the honor.  Next year’s event, slated for August 23-24, 2016, will mark the centennial celebration of the inaugural race on the Detroit River for the iconic trophy.

“But we have so much to look forward to even before the Gold Cup’s return,” Weber said. “The UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit HydroFest is less than a month away and promises two days of action-packed racing, including the unlimiteds, Grand Prix and Formula 2 tunnel boats.”

Thanks to generous sponsorship, all general admission parks will be free and open to the public for this year’s UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit HydroFest.  Grandstand seating starts at $45, with ticket prices increasing up to $175 for the VIP Club Gold Cup.  There are a limited number of RV camping spots available on-site.
